PES vs DST: Which Embroidery Format Do You Actually Need?
If you’ve just bought your first machine embroidery design, the list of file formats can be baffling: PES, DST, JEF, EXP, HUS, VP3, the same design in six extensions. Here’s what they are and which one you actually need.
What embroidery file formats really are
An embroidery file isn’t a picture, it’s a set of instructions telling your machine where to place every stitch, in what order and in which colour. Different brands read different “languages”, which is why one design ships in several formats.
- PES – Brother and Babylock machines.
- DST – the universal commercial/Tajima format.
- JEF – Janome.
- VP3 – Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff.
- EXP / HUS / XXX – older or specialist machines.
PES vs DST: the short answer
Stitching at home on a Brother or Babylock? Use PES – it carries the thread colours with it. Running a commercial multi-needle machine? DST is the safe, universal choice; you just set colours manually.
