Embroidery Stabiliser Basics: Cut-Away vs Tear-Away vs Wash-Away

The right stabiliser (backing) is the difference between a crisp design and a puckered mess. Here’s when to use each of the three main types.

Cut-away

The most stable option. It stays behind the fabric permanently and supports dense designs and stretchy materials like t-shirts and knitwear. Use it whenever the stitch count is high.

Tear-away

Quick and clean, it tears off after stitching. Best for stable woven fabrics and lighter designs: tea towels, canvas bags, cotton.

Wash-away

Dissolves in water, leaving no trace. Use it for free-standing lace, sheer fabrics, and as a topping on towels so stitches don’t sink into the pile.

Rule of thumb: knits and dense designs = cut-away; wovens and light designs = tear-away; sheers and lace = wash-away.

A well-digitised file needs less fighting with stabiliser, which is why every design in our collection is test-stitched first. Next, read which file format you need.
